Thanks Terry, my little brother found a site on the internet that lists the actual car the gearbox came out in by means of serial number identification.  His came out in a Detroit built 68 mustang from memory.  Maybe his box is an american made one, hence no switch on it or were all the toploaders canadian built?

thanks for all the insight

Ford XW/XY have column shifters have the switch at the end of the shifter rod near the firewall and I presume that this continued on later models with 3 on tree gears. The Canadian top loader have the switch in the box just like a Datto but these were prone to failure and the easiest fix was to fit a manual switch inside the car as per Mark's email. If memory serves me correctly the XC was the first model to have separate white reversing lights, I had a couple of XA's, a GT and a 351 GS Ute both with top loaders that only lit both indicators and an XB/6 and I can't recall the XB having white reversing lights either. The Bluebird P411 in 1966 had white lights to show you how long it took Oz cars to catch on that it's a good idea to be able to see where you're going in reverse at night.

regards
Terry

I have  a feeling that the column change one's had it under the dash or the end of the shifter at the fire wall. As to the floor change I'm not sure sorry.

I would go to another RWC place.  If  car isn't fitted with reverse lights then you shouldn't have to rig up a set.

Cheers  Mark, exactly my point.  We've been through all the manuals we could get our hands on and can't identify a circuit which would do such a thing.  In the end we are going to rig up a microswitch to trigger both indicators in the tail lights like others have suggested.
Cheers guys

hi,   dont know if it was the same for fords,   BUT     i think that some older cars  (holdens?) used the rear indicators for the reversing lights, you could put a single reversing light on the back , with a switch on the dash?.   as for the switch, i think some gearboxes came with a bracket that held a switch..

i just went out to the shed  and had a look  in the xy workshop manual,  at the 4 speed, and  i couldnt see a switch  on the box, some thing doesnt seem right.......

Subject: reversing lights (off topic)

Hey guys just a quick one,

my little bro put his XY ute in for a roadworthy (QLD) today and it didn't get passed as it has no reversing lights.  For one, the toploader gearbox has no reverse light switch on it and the ORIGINAL XY tail lights only have brake lights and indicator lights.  I tried arguing with the road worthy guy saying that because it didn't have any as original fitment it doesn't require any, but he won't budge.  Am I right or is he?

Cheers
