G'day All, I am having troubles getting me L24 to run. I brought it with a blown head gasket and have taken the head off and replaced the gasket. Prior to disassembly I (following the Hayes workshop manual), I turned the engine until the crank-marks showed it as being at TDC and the points in the distributer were in the position to fire number 1. I assumed that this was TDC on the compression stroke. I then white-outed marks to match the head and the timing chain, and the camshaft sprocket and timing chain so I would be able to get the timing right when i put it back together. Having put it back together I now get a loud 'CLACK' noise coming from two of the values every so often, accompanied with buggerall compression. So I'm guessing i've bent atleast 6 values somewhere along the way, but what i can't work out is, i am almost positive that i put it back together as i pulled it apart.. and i did have it running (for the briefest period as the head gasket was blown) prior to pulling it apart. I did the whole thing with the wood wedge so the timing chain tensioner wouldn't move etc and that all worked fine. And when i put it back together the timing chain marks lined up as they had (indicating no slipping a tooth on the crank spocket which i had considered because i accidentally dropped the chain while removing the camshaft sprocket) so i'm stumped. Sorry about the long message but any help would be much appreciated. Regards,
