Dave,

It's easy to check if you put it back together timed correctly. There is an
indent n the thrust washer behind the cam wheel that aligns with the V in
the cam wheel at TDC compression #1 (i.e. both lobes on #1 pointing
upwards.) I take it you didn't turn the engine by hand before firing -
always a good idea on a OHC engine. Ignore all of the bright links etc when
you do the valve timing check. The Haynes manual will have a full page
dedicated to installing the cam chain from scratch i.e. t/cover off, but
they are a bit short on help for a head off only job.

regards
Terry

Subject: L24 troubles. Please help

G'day All,

I am having troubles getting me L24 to run. I brought it with a blown
head gasket and have taken the head off and replaced the gasket. Prior to
disassembly I (following the Hayes workshop manual), I turned the engine
until the crank-marks showed it as being at TDC and the points in the
distributer were in the position to fire number 1. I assumed that this
was TDC on the compression stroke. I then white-outed marks to match the
head and the timing chain, and the camshaft sprocket and timing chain so
I would be able to get the timing right when i put it back together.
Having put it back together I now get a loud 'CLACK' noise coming from
two of the values every so often, accompanied with buggerall compression.
So I'm guessing i've bent atleast 6 values somewhere along the way, but
what i can't work out is, i am almost positive that i put it back
together as i pulled it apart.. and i did have it running (for the
briefest period as the head gasket was blown) prior to pulling it apart.
I did the whole thing with the wood wedge so the timing chain tensioner
wouldn't move etc and that all worked fine. And when i put it back
together the timing chain marks lined up as they had (indicating no
slipping a tooth on the crank spocket which i had considered because i
accidentally dropped the chain while removing the camshaft sprocket) so
i'm stumped.
Sorry about the long message but any help would be much appreciated.
Regards,

Dave
