I think you are talking about a reluctor?  Hall effect is usually optical
with a disc breaking a light beam which leads to the unit sending a signal
to the computer.  No sure about the retard/advance units.  Simply
disconnecting the vacuum signal for the advance/retard canister will stop it
working, but the mechanical advance I'm not sure about.
