Hall effect sensors are magnetic pickups, they can be a bit of a pain to interface to as they produce an analogue output, which needs to go through signal processing and conditioning to be in a form suitable to easily fire coils. You could use a schmitt trigger to convert the signal to a nice digital one. One potential pain in the ass I can see is that the output of a hall effect sensor is related to the distance from the magnet, so if you dont line up all four you could have the cylinders all a little out of whack with respect to each other, it wouldnt take much to advance one by a couple of degrees. Personally I would use an optical pickup like Daniel is talking about, I am kind of mid development of an EFI computer, and after looking at most of the ways of picking up crankshaft rotation I recon using a chopper wheel like from a camira crank angle sensor would be the go, modified to suit, it would be a doodle to take the output from an optical sensor and driving coils.
