I have an honours degree in Chemical Physics, graduating in 1992 from Griffith Uni, and all I can say is Helium makes balloons go up because it would be a shit gas if it didn't do something special.

Helium by itself doesnt create lift, the difference in density between helium and its surroundings creates the lift.
