James,

The are a couple of Aussie Datsuns that have starter that are very similar
to the FJ, a couple that I know of are the L24E (Skyline R30) and L28E out
of a ZX. I'm not sure if they are identical to the FJ (DR30 version) but
they've got to be close as they both will fit on a L series as does a FJ
starter. Naps(Z) starters are no good for L or FJ as the solenoid fitting
wont clear the block.

Can't say that I've ever checked the voltages on a FJ starter, never needed
to as I've never seen one that doesn't work and they work real well - you
can drive a 1600 in 2nd gear up a kerb with one as the FJ starter is one of
the best out there and they're nearly burst proof. Eccentric starters from
my experience with them only ever develop one small problem over time and
that is the they wear out the two small copper tags that get thumped by the
solenoid pin when you hit the Starter switch. These little tags complete the
circuit to the starter but the constant violent contact doesn't do them any
good over time. Denso (Toy) starters are the same as are H*ndahs, we put the
H*ndah tags in Denso starters as they last twice as long as the Toy Denso
ones and a good auto spark will know what goes in a Nissan starter.

Gibbs Auto at Belco in the Carco centre are good guys and know there stuff.

regards,
Terry

Hi All,

It appears my FJ starter has issues with a voltage drop between the solonoid
and the main part of the starter (sorry don't know the correct terms!!).
I've got 12 volts at the solonoid where the battery cable connects but when
I've got the key in the start position the bolt below that transfers power
from the solonoid to the main part I can only register around 7 volts.

Is this normal???? (I compared to my et turbo and they both register 12
volts). The car sounds like a battery is flat but I know it isn't (cos I've
tried more than 1 battery)

Do I have anyother options than getting an FJ starter, a sparkie told me
that a Series 3 bluebird would be the one to get is this correct????
