Most ppl run around a 4 gauge single wire from within the boot through the back seat area and along the tunnel. A neat conversion that Fergy did in his 1600 was to route the cable through the firewall via the autotrans selector rod grommet (near steering column) as it comes out very close to the starter. On a 1600 all the power feeds eg alternator, fusible link etc come off the starter so there is nothing else to do in the engine bay. Also, what a lot of ppl do is run a much smaller wire (~6mm) in parallel to the positive feed as a secondary earth from the engine bay, much the same as the original 1600 wiring has a secondary earth from the -tve battery cable standard. Some alternators don't like this earth missing, Bosch in particular. Then you run the main earth from the battery to a good connection to the body in the boot. I've seen a lot of variations here, but the support bracket near the wheel well is a popular choice. An auto electrician can supply a cut-out (sometimes called a "gang" switch) which isolates the battery positive feed. The thing is mostly these are also mounted in the boot - bit hard to get to in an emergency I would have thought, but they pass scrutineering with them there. Obviously there is no need to go all th way up to where it used to sit. Can you just runa heavy cable to the starter and then tap off the other wires from that, or is it better to make up a junction block thing on the body on go from there. Is it better to run it inside the body or outside? And what type of fuse to use, a big car audio one in the boot.
