Don't go to a car audio store to get your cable, it'll be way overpriced. Try to find an auto electrician who sells big cable - there's a pretty cheap one at Port Adelaide but that's not much use to you :) I use a single run of 2ga since I got it cheap, but a single run of 4ga would probably be fine too..
check out http://www.the12volt.com/wiring/recwirsz.asp Have a guess how much your starter draws, or find out how many CCA your battery produces. It goes without saying that you won't need cable that supports more current than the battery can supply. Note that CCA is quoted as a short-term power output of the battery, since the starter is normally the single biggest current drain in a car, you can safely use cable rated for around half that.
