Paul,

This is where I'd start. Datsuns have a quirk with the way they wire both
lights on one side via a common fuse. If a fuse blows or doesn't contact
well you get symptoms exactly as you've described. As Chris says, the 1600
(and 180B) were notorious for this little trick.

Check your fuses, this will lead to one light being dimmer than the other if
the fuse is blown sometimes, does in a 1600 anyways :)
