Chris,

Nice article this and well worth the read. It does explain offset and backspace as they are interpreted in Australia - I didn't have a problem with Kurt's article either but I guess I've been messing around with wheels for a long time now.

The good thing about knowing how to use this information is that it makes the search for replacement wheels a lot easier than just trial and error, (all you need is a tape measure) or you can look through catalogues and understand what will fit your vehicle and what wont. The thing is most wheels are spec'd in catalogues with a tyre fit width (not the safety bead width), PCD and the offset, which isn't all that useful as the backspace will vary with the different widths. The backspace range on the average 1600 is 90 - 110mm and the stock offset is 100mm (or 3 15/16" in the old language). From now on you can work out if a particular size wheel has a reasonable chance of  fitting your 1600 or not.

regards
Terry

No Ben. B+C is the Backspace.

A very nice page describing the dimensions of a rim can be found at:

yeah thanx for that Terry.

I am not sure what the last measurement is but it seems pretty important when fitting bigger calipers.. I read the article and it was fairly informative. Thankyou.

the offset is the difference of the backspace and total rim width? with the centre of the rim being 0 offset???

So if i have an offset which pushes the mounting point of the hub/wheel further out from the car it means the wheel may touch the strut etc, however if i go the other way the wheel may touch the guards?

The problem i have now is finding a wheel with a centre mounting point which is raised above the front of the wheel. So i can mount a caliper which will not touch on the front of the rim's face. Know of any off the top of your head Terry?

cheers again
