Sorry but I have forgotten the original post that mentioned the fatter calipers, I was just replying to the backspace-offset issue.
 
Back to the original question then, have you actually on hand calipers fatter than your original that will not fit in a particular rim???
 
I am asking because judging from past experience, it is usually the design of the rim and the diameter that dictates the size of the disk/caliper combo you may install. Only problem I had with this issue was the caliper needing a judicious "filing" of its top side so it would fit in a 15" rim.

A = overall rim width
B = Offset
B+C = backspace.
