Adam,

Good news that you're are runner. These things happen - you were so lucky
that you didn't fry something. Interesting symptoms and obviously hard to
pick from here (without seeing it) when a starter is wired up wrong.

well i figured out what the problem was and i'm very embarassed about it
actually....

i had hooked the power lead for the starter upto the battery negative (yeah
yeah i know i'm an idiot)....I think it's one of the stupidest things i've
done to date :)

Engine runs beautifullly now.

Thanks to everyone who offered help re the starter motor, i think it was
Terry, David and others...thanks guys.
