IMHO 'trimming' the rear springs in a 1600  is acceptable upt to a point. The rear 'low' king spring makes the car still sit an inch or so too high when combined with the low front spring.
From memory the rear spring is rated at about 650-700lb an inch, taking 1/2 or 3/4 or a coil will probably add another 50-75 lb to that, which is still fine for road use.
The spring will still be captive in the seat and if trimmed from the bottom (as it sits in the a arm) wont rattle or move.
Also it must be trimmed using a hacksaw only, grinding or even worse gas axe will re-temper the spring and may cause problems down the track.

my .02$ worth,

Cheers,

If you cut them the spring rate will increase and they might end up too firm for street use, plus they won't seat properly which can cause some loud noises from the rear end. Shouldn't cost much to have them compressed.
