actually harder (stiffer) springs are more difficult to keep captive than standard springs, because they produce the same supporting force with a much shorter movement. this is why race suspensions often require a 'helper' spring - a much softer short spring compared to the main spring that compresses against itself during use to allow the main spring only to do its job, while still keeping the main spring captive if the suspension reaches full rebound.
