What we need is someone to start casting FIA's. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:membersozdat_owner@;datascribe.com.au] On Behalf Of Terry Rudd Sent: Wednesday, 6 November 2002 9:52 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: 32/36 downdraft recommendations...
Richard, The closed chamber heads are pretty much all the same, except valves, port sizes and design and the chamber volume (L20B is 45cc). The U67 head that was made in Aus wasn't all that well cast, lots of head gaskets were blown around the front passenger side water jacket - early A10 W53 heads had the same problem but once replanned they seemed to hold together especially if a ACL Monotorque gasket was used. CR wise, roughly for every 1mm a L18 is bored it goes up by ~0.35 and 0.1 for every 10 thou shaved off the head, so a L18 bored 1mm (40 thou) and 20 thou off the A87 head will be 9.5 (base CR) + .35 + .2 = ~10:1, much the same as a stock W53 not shaved at all on a stock L18 bore. You must plan your attack, get prices from suppliers etc - it's too exy to get it wrong. Personally if I was building up an L18 bored 40 thou, flattop ACL pistons, then I'd give the W53 head a go probably stage 1 ported, 66 cam, add 1 or 2 45's with a header and 2.25" exhaust, Bluey S2 dizzy and coil, 3.9:1 diff with a C210 or R30 5 speed and a Daikin (2000 Sports copy) clutch. I haven't totally rebuilt a L engine for years, but at a rough guess that little lot is going to cost well over $1000, probably closer to $1500 including gaskets and that's fitting it all together yourself. Stock valve springs are good for 7200 rpm all day everyday, you aren't going to get a failure in that department. Lash pads have to be sourced to match your cam. With costs going up for rebuilds, you can see why ppl just shove engines like CA18 and SR20 turbos in 1600's and be done with it. regards Terry -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:membersozdat_owner@;datascribe.com.au]On Behalf Of Richard Webb Sent: Thursday, 7 November 2002 12:51 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: 32/36 downdraft recommendations... So from what I can understand the A87 head is the way to go to start off with? Or is it possible to get a l20b head flowing the same? Is it all flow or do they have other differances? I think I need to plan how Im going to rebuild the engine before I do it. I was thinking port the l20b head, new cam either 74 or 76 degree (going on the comments on the list) , flat top pistons (dunno wtf to look for at the moment, how much should I be looking at?). What should I do to valves/valve springs ( I have no idea with these either)? Anyway I guess its all a learning curve from here, sorry for all the questions!
