It's a bit hard to tell if a manual has done a lot of towing, clutch problems are evident, although not conclusive (burnouts stuff clutches pretty much just as well). An auto is a bit easier to diagnose, discoloured ATF is a no no, and also an auto with a big bar but without a tranny cooler is not a good sign.
