Welder advice

I remember reading ages ago a thread about which welder to buy, and what you need to look for etc but I had a look for the archives but there doesn't seem to be any???

Anyway, I figure im gonna spend between $500 and $1000 on a welder , i guess MIG, mainly to do exhausts, body work, fix the garage etc. Maybe a turbo manifold if I am any good at welding.

Basically I am wondering what power to get, where to get it, what to look for, gas or gas less? Im in Melbourne so can you suggest anywhere to buy it from?

I have a friend who is a stainless worker who is going to teach me how to weld (he doesn't know it yet!) so hopefully I can work it out.
