You need a voltmeter to tell you that the VR is overcharging - an ammeter wont. Ideally you'd like both in the car, a combined gauge even - there's a challenge for the gauge makers. I guess I would/do use a multi-tester to check the VR output as a service item, as this situation isn't going to stop you in the short term.
Backfiring on acceleration - additional to the items you've listed. Dizzy cap, condenser, air leaks (gaskets, carbie top and shaft), vac leads, vac advance unit working, dizzy breaker plates i.e. centrifugal advance unit not frozen - there are backfires (usually noisiest as in boom or bang) and there are misfires (just a jerking feeling), only experience gained looking for either on a regular basis tells you the difference and therefore what your chasing and it's bit hard to describe the difference much better on email. Things like light or heavy load to induce - light load tends to suggest backfire (air leaks usually), heavy load is misfire and your looking for a component failure - only a general rule and not always conclusive. Have fun, you gotta love looking for a misfire. regards Terry (puts Toy cap on now to go and finish rebuilding an engine) -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Richard Webb Sent: Monday, 16 December 2002 6:02 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: gauges...? yeah I knew I spelt it wrong as soon as I sent it. The reason I ask was I recently had an overcharging battery, would a ammeter have shown that, or would it just be shown with a high voltage on a voltmeter? Also I have a backfiring problem atm. So far I've checked Timing/dizzy/plugs/leads what else should I check. Im just about to go replace the coil (with a spare). It happened after I replaced the plugs (maybe I have a dodgey plug?). Also its not the kinda backfiring when you back off, its often when your accelerating. Thanks for your help anyway, Richard ----- Original Message ----- From: "Terry Rudd" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, December 14, 2002 3:51 PM Subject: RE: gauges...? --membersozdat------------------------------------------------------- OZDAT Mailing List Please Note:- Send (un)subscribe requests to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send submissions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] No unauthorised redistribution of this email http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/index.htm http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/listindex.html http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------
