Title: SR20DET

Yeah Errol, how are you? I’m still in Canberra but now I’m a PS with Defence. Clean hands at last!! I had Woolly (remember him?) look at this front cut today and he says it’s perfect. Now I’m worried about this sump problem. I might have to turn the pan around even if it means cutting or fabricating something. I might even look at converting the 720 to R&S steering and putting it behind the sump where it should be.

Good to hear you are still at it!

Lach

Hi Lach,

Its Errol Smith here, I used to work at GT Sales in Fyshwick from 74-78 then bought Polymedia in Phillip. I got out of that in 1981. We sold you guys heaps of SEV Marchal Optilux and Cibies before Gerry became a restraunter!

I sold an SR to a guy putting it in a 720. He water jet cut the base of the sump of above the flat section before it drops into the well including the windage channel.

A new section was made from alloy below this level and also the pickup had to be extended made to run to the new well. He had his made from folded aluminium sheet metal tigged to the old flange section.

Are you still in Canberra?

Cheers,
Feral Errol

Subject: SR20DET

Hello and let me introduce myself. My name is Lach MacLean and I have been a mechanic for 30 years (or so!). I have been involved with Datsuns/Nissans since 1974 when I worked for a guy in Canberra called Gerry Ball. We used to produce Australia’s best rally cars at the time. I’ve since worked for the Ford Rally Team (yeah, I know), so I know my way around comp vehicles.

What I want to know is, have any of you done a SR20DET conversion into a 720? Mine is an ’86 720 Dual cab with the SD23 diesel. I have sourced a front cut from an 180SX and before I commit myself, I would like some comments from anyone who has attempted this.

One issue I can see is that the 720 has front steering and the engine is a front sump. Can the oil pan be turned around?

Any comments would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Lach
