Dave,
Get a
test light and another person, disconnect the small wire and put one end of the
test light in the spade connector and ground the other end. Get the other person
to turn the key to the start position to see if the light comes on. If it does
then the solenoid is stuffed, if it doesn`t then you may have a buggered
ignition switch.
Try wiggling/turning the key a little past the
start position and see if that does anything.
Also check the earth cable from the battery to the
engine/chassis for corrosion/bad connection.
The battery connections tight and
clean?
