hi, as long as the cmpression ratio isnt something stupid, the std starter
should be okay...my bro use to have a 302 windsor with 10.5 to 1  and the
starter turned over normal.

in the starter there is a bush in  each end to support  the armature, if one
of these bushes is worn  enough, the armature  can touch the feild coils
that  surround it. ( there is supposed to be a air gap around the armature),
then  the  starter will turn over sluggish, and  it will seem like the
battery only lasts 15-20 seconds or so..might be worth checking ...
