Terry,
In the "olden days"  3 speed manuals in Fords used engine oil in them as per
manufacturers specs.   A dim wit "mechanic" I used for a very short time
claimed this was crap & proceeded to use SAE 90.   Cost me 2 gearboxes in
very short time.   Result was the circlip on the end of the main shaft used
to snap the end of the spline.   All I can put it down to was the heavy oil
used to make it very hard if not impossible at times to change gears.
Extra force used obviously damaged the weak point.      New BW T5  5 speeds
use auto trans fluid.   Works OK.
