Subject: Roads built for Datsuns

I have had a bit of Datsun 1600 road experience over Easter.

For Victorians or interstate travellers through Gippsland, here are a couple
of real Datsun drivers roads.

#1 Heyfield to Licola up the Macallister River Valley. (and beyond Licola
for another 80 kms. to Mt Howitt car park, if you like serious dirt
driving.)

Had to rescue my son's Datsun 1600 up there Easter Saturday.
Luke and his wife had been bush walking on Friday and returning Friday
night, the Datto simply stopped near the "airfield" - the highest airstrip
in Australia - situated at 5200 feet - on top of the Snowy Range. My son,
(an electrical engineer) thought he had a dud distributor cap, as he found
it had lost its central spring loaded rotor contact. This turned out to be
the wrong diagnosis, his car still ran with the dud Datsun dizzy cap.

The stoppage was actually caused by his non Datsun (VL Commodore) fuel pump
breaking its rubber mounts, due to the rugged road, consequently pulling off
its power wires = no fuel to the injectors.

After discovering the real problem, "I always new it was risky using non
Datto parts in the bush" - says the old man wisely to the fast learning son.
2 electrical ties temporarily fixed the problem the engine then fired up
immediately and got the Datsun home.

Due to this drama, I had two drives each of 300 kms, up and back along this
brilliant road, the second time trying to keep up with son Luke rebuilding
the hastily repaired Datto's image as a fast, reliable(?) bush machine.
Following behind in a quiet Commodore, with the open window I could hear the
Datto's exhaust barking musically as Luke pulled 6 grand out of each bend in
the crisp mountain air, to pass assorted 4WD's and trail bikes holding up
our (rapid) progress. Probably all the Easter campers along the Wellington
River were awakened not to the sound of birds, or trail bikes, but the great
sound of an L series on full noise! The Datto even raised cheers from the
group at Melbourne Grammar's bush camp who had probably heard the Datto
coming for miles along the Wellington River, and were lined up along the
road as we powered past them.

Also the first time I've really found out how much fuel a Commodore chews if
you try really pushing it to follow a good Datto in the bush. Had to refuel
it at 112.9c/ltr at Licola.- worth every penny for the fun.

#2 Tarwin Lower to Foster
A great coastal drive on bitumen, without too many other travellers out of
the holiday season.

If your in Gippsland in your Datto have a look at these great roads.
