I dont have a hoist and the only way I found it relatively easy to do is the following.
I puchased a mid quality (chinese made) 3/4" socket set which incuded a long bar for the 32(?)mm socket. (About $80 at a tool shop) You can buy the right socket and bar individually but they cost about $20 and $40 respectively, I felt it better to buy the whole set for another $20. I removed the completely assembled rear cross member from the car, with trailing arms attached. I set up the bar/socket on the nut after punching the crimped section of each nut open. On the outside of the stub axle, I fit the wheel nuts to the studs and place a long length of 38mm square tube between the studs. Stand on the trailing arm and pull on the socket bar. This action will cause the trailing arm to lift as the square tube tries to turn. Bounce on the trailing arm while the tension is applied. The nuts should let go after one or two bounces. You will then understand why they are called "Jesus" nuts. Whilst the trailing arms are out you can easily weld all the brackets needed to fit the hand brake cables. Since doing the job this way, I have removed 6 stub axles and found it to be the easiest way to do the R31 disc brake conversion. Fit new nuts and tension to 210 ft lbs. when reassembling. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeff Oldham" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Membersozdat" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, October 10, 2004 9:13 PM Subject: r31 rear disk conversion > I am part way through the r31 rear disk conversion on my 1600. > and have gotten to the bit where i need to remove the backing plate \ dust > cover. > Is there an easy way to remove the little stub axles ? > I was told that it is a B&[EMAIL PROTECTED] of a job & it seems to be the case > I dont know how your meant to change the rear wheel bearings on these > things........ > > Any way before i sit there with a grinder cutting the backing plates off > is there a trick to removing the big old nut that holds the axle in ? > > thanks Jeff > > > --membersozdat------------------------------------------------------- OZDAT Mailing List Please Note:- Send (un)subscribe requests to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Send submissions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] No unauthorised redistribution of this email http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/index.htm http://www.ozdat.com/ozdatonline/listindex.html http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------
