I have a couple of mates up here who are Volvo mad. One of them raced a 144
coupe in short course touring cars (dirt track) with some success. Problem
was, most of the safety aspects had to be removed to reduce weight, so at
the end of the day they were the same as any other lightened shell reliant
on the cage to provide stiffness and safety. He fitted 55mm Webers he
imported from US and went nuts with cam profiles, it was a screamer but had
no torque out of corners so commitment was huge, usually resulting in a bit
of lumberjack work... Kept tearing the external crossover off the brakes
too and would not be convinced to convert them to internal - nah not Volvo
he would say. I once told him to fit 4 spot Sumitomos off a Datto and he
took out a restraining order on me. Ah well...

Oh come on be nice Errol :)

I was all set to buy a 1600 but had dinner with the boys and they talked me
out of it... Buy a Stanza or a 180b they said...

Went and looked at a few in the 6-8k range.

Got offered the Volvo for $2500 + the spare engines + parts car.
Seats/harnesses/intercom/meter...

Dude needed the money cos his missus was on his back :)

Ah, the mediocrity of late middle age in one so young :-) And being able to
ustify it as well.
The dark side has him and it is terminal.

Why do you guys think I bought the Volvo rally car instead of a datto...

1. They are strong as hell
2. Complete cars are in good nick and worth almost nothing (a complete
manual 164 sold on ebay for $7.50 not long ago - if it had been running I
would have flown over and drove it back) 3. They come with Volvo brakes as
standard :) 4. You don't break driveline components in a Volvo, or engines
it seems if you are careful not to over-rev them 5. I wouldn't have gotten a
good 1600 shell for what I paid for a complete almost ready to go car +
spare car + 3 spare engines

Emotionally I wanted a Datto - but I am not racing anybody and no doubt this
Volvo will be slower but I know I will have less trouble if I bend this, and
I think mechanically I am less likely to!
