Caster bushes it was. Of course now something else doesn't feel up the scratch. It's funny how your opinion of how a car should handle changes between taking it off the road and rebuilding it.
Although I am very happy the sunny steering wheel! It's gotta be the perfect diameter and $16.50 is a whole lot cheaper than a brand new Momo!
Thanks! zac

Zac,
That will certainly do it if the braking system is sound.
To test radius rod bushes turn steering to half lock, grab the road wheel that's pointing outwards and rock it back & forth in a horizontal plan i.e. your hand will be on the tyre at 9 & 3 o'clock. Watch the radius shaft as it goes through the donut from engine side (not the big nut side) - if they're really stuffed you'll feel the movement in the wheel anyway. The wheel aligner bloke should have picked bush problems if that's what it turns out to be but I guess you can't bet on it these days. The other possibility is the idler arm bush and the passenger side wheel will move independently of the drivers side which is anchored by the pitman arm which also is bushed, but not as prone to wearing out as the idler on a 1600. again the wheel aligner should tell you if these are stuffed.
Floating suggests shocks or springs are stuffed or totally working at odds with each other i.e. rates are not a good mix. I can't se how the sway bar would cause these symptoms.
Regards, Terry

OK blokes, got a problem with my 1600 - it pulls right badly under braking, floats all over the road noticeably at speeds over 60km/h and makes a squeaking noise at any speed between 20 and 60 clicks. Tyres are
in quite good nick, car has been in for a wheel alignment but toe and camber were already spot on. For a while I thought the front right shock
had carked it but I have the struts out, springs off and the shocks are fine.
The only thing that has changed since the rebuild is the swaybar but that has got new bushes. actually the sway bar sits slightly off centre.
could this be the cause of my problem?
The only other thing I can think of is that caster is poor, or another bushing is worn. they all appear OK but could be dead.
I know it could be almost anything under the front end but I thought I'd
ask anyway..
Cheers.
