I gotta agree with you mate. They are brutal on speeding in NSW where I am.
I can't think of more than maybe 1 or 2 smashes I've seen that were a direct
result of speeding.

The other thing that really shits me is this new 40km/h BS around schools.
When I was 7 years old we were placed into this compulsory education program
about road rules, and how not to get killed while your on a bike, or even
walking. It made getting my Learners licence 9 years later a breeze. Now it
seems like it's more financially viable to drop the speed limits, punish the
drivers & collect fine money. Instead of spending money on educating the
kids. That's gunna bite them on the ass in 10 years time when all these kids
hit the roads with no ingrained knowledge of road safety.

As for the advanced driver training, I agree to a point. The way I think it
should work is that 16yo gets learners licence, completes the basic
training, and goes for P licence test. Now if they pass P licence, they then
should have to go on and do the advanced driving course and pass it BEFORE
they are handed their P licence. Same deal when they get their second P
licence a year (or 2) later, pass an advanced driving course of some sort,
maybe a little more difficult than the first one.
Unfortunately most P platers do all their learning and mistake making /
self-taught advanced driver training while on their P's and on the public
roads, and therefore write a car or 2 off, get fined a couple of dozen
times, etc..

The system sucks.

Hey Geordie,

I have no doubt about your experiences and I had little comment except for
Malcolm's "assertion" that drink driving crash statistics are somehow
propoganda.

The government here has demonised low level speeding and drink driving, but
when the figures are analysed more carefully the figures show that
inattention and inexperience are much more dangerous than doing 3km/hr over
the limit. Yet nothing is being done about it.

Imagine if all the speed camera cash was spent on compulsory advanced driver
training for all 16 year olds. Its a dream I hold but it doesn't generate
revenue nor does it generate a catch-phrase allowing the government to THINK
it is doing something about the problem.

And the police in this have become little more than compliant tax collectors
for the government. Hell I know I'd rather cop a fine than have some senior
copper put the wind up me. And I know which one is gonna slow me down...
