While I like the visual of this logo I'm a little bit afraid of the military connotations. After all we are all about freedom of choice something completely absent from the military.
Thumbs up for the contest idea. After that however the branding should be the work of a team and not crowdsourced as we need to keep consistency and character. Before firing up a contest we should produce a mission statement and principles document so that we can convey the ideas to the designers that will participate. Also, we should require from the participants, besides the logo, one paragraph of thoughts around the deisign. Finally the any participating logo must come in 5 versions: color, mono, pixelated (16x16), and if applicable, in horizontal and vertical orientations. It should look good in all those versions (not machine generated variants). We could also use a new font if there is any font designer around. A specialized font gives a unique character to the UI and branding material. The font must be designed with primarily digital use in mind. M.
