The article tells you how to send out a single mail, if you're having problems with that, please describe them in detaill (meaning, what you did, what you expected to happen, what actually happened, and a stack trace if available). It then tells you how to avoid performance problems if you are sending many mails after an action. This is just one way of solving the problem, another is to use a queue system (AMQP, beanstalkd, starling, etc...), or to use a third party provider for sending out mails.
