A few months ago my Dad and I were talking about changing trasmission fluid and 
he pointed out that years ago they'd almost never change the transmission fluid 
at least until it turned brown and smelled bad. I pointed out how cars didn't 
get the kind of transmission life we get now...

Of course 50k is pretty terrible...

The trannys used to be good for 50,000 miles at best.  My parents had a
'71 Skylark, with the 350 V8.  The motor never gave them any real
trouble, but they went through 3 transmissions in under 150,000 miles
(and the car was dealer maintained).
