A few months ago my Dad and I were talking about changing trasmission fluid and he pointed out that years ago they'd almost never change the transmission fluid at least until it turned brown and smelled bad. I pointed out how cars didn't get the kind of transmission life we get now...

The motor never gave them any real trouble, but they went through 3 transmissions in under 150,000 miles (and the car was dealer maintained).
