Any Audi that old is a rare car because they RUST like crazy.
However, the TD isn't a bad engine (my Volvo has the 6 cylinder 2.4L
version) and other than a fragile aluminum head (sound familiar to OM
603 owners?) they are quite robust.
Probably NOT a blown head gasket, although that's possible -- serious
cracking between the valves is usually the problem. This can be bad
enough that the valve guides come loose and "pump" in the head.
However, the Volvo/Renault/VW head can be welded.
