If this is the same as the Quantum, there is plenty of room to work
under the hood, so it probably is not a big deal.

Probably NOT a blown head gasket, although that's possible -- serious
cracking between the valves is usually the problem. This can be bad
enough that the valve guides come loose and "pump" in the head.
However, the Volvo/Renault/VW head can be welded.
