Should be able to check that by pinching the vaccuum hose to the brake booster flat with a clamp of some sort. Or disconnect and plug at the engine end.

How much work is it to pull the vac pump and see if it still has its bearings and if the timer face is chewed up? If the bearings haven't scattered, then there's no need to figure out how to retrieve them.
