Seller said he thought the crank was bent from the balancer having been
loose.  Is that at all likely?  Seems like it would take an awful lot of
force to bend the crankshaft.  I could see things being chewed up to
some degree, but not bent.  Or am I mistaken?

Impact wrench?  hard to get accurate with that though.
