No, I'm sure it was the processor for this reason! it was running HOT (60-65C at idle), a sign that the power supply on the board was failing.

I suspect some memory problems, but did not load the board specific drivers for video, drives, or ethernet.

Very annoying that it STARTED to work (that is, loading drivers for everything), but kept crashing when I told it I didn't want to re- activate yet.

I have a spare drive, and I'll re-format it again and start over with the proper drivers.

The board is a used one, Foxconn with an AMD Athlon 64 and I don't think there is anything wrong with it -- works fine in Safe Mode, after all.

I can also boot Ubuntu or Knoppix and do some hardware testing. Can format a drive, too.
