Just a wild guess, but on a 124, the foam insulation on the
recirculation flap can disintegrate and blow onto the heater core,
where it melts and makes a nasty smell.  The cure is to disassemble
things enough to get at the flap (remove monowiper assembly and heater
blower) and scrape off the rest of the insulation.  I've had this
happen on three different 124s, but I don't know enough about 123s to
know if that's a possible phenomenon.
