I don't actually have the 300TD anymore, it was my first MB so I do hold it with some fondness. It was a basket case though. If I'd known then what I know now I could have kept it longer but alas as an apartment dweller it was a terrible car.
Of the other two it depends on what I'm doing. For commuting the 190D is great. Its more powerful than the 240D and smaller and lighter so considerably more "zippy" as my wife says. The 5 link suspension is way tighter and more fun than a 123. It gets better mileage too. The 240D averages about 28mpg, the 190D averages 37. For carrying stuff or people the 240D is a bigger car and thus better. We're going camping in a couple months and the 240D is the obvious choice. Its also called for when we want to take the 17' canoe with us. I also enjoy driving a manual trans more than an auto. The 300TD was a delightful highway car and the self leveling rear end was the most composed I've ever experienced, hit whatever bump you want at whatever speed you want and it just took care of it. I'd love to have another one. When my 240D gets too rusty too keep I'll probably go looking for a wagon. -Curt Date: Mon, 7 May 2012 07:38:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Dimitri Seretakis <dsereta...@yahoo.com> To: Mercedes Discussion List <mercedes@okiebenz.com> Subject: Re: [MBZ] A Cathey-esque weekend Message-ID: <1336401528.53673.yext-apple-iph...@web125104.mail.ne1.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Sounds like you were busy. So which of the three cars is your favorite? Sent from my iPhone On May 7, 2012, at 8:43 AM, Curt Raymond <curtlud...@yahoo.com> wrote: Although I never seem to get anything done before breakfast... Anyway going whale watching last weekend (err, 2 weekends ago since its Monday) my '84 190D dropped its muffler. We were running late so I jumped out, tossed it in the trunk and roared off. I'd done this on my '81 300TD too and the 190D is MUCH louder... Fortunately I forsaw this coming and a replacement arrived from Q on Tuesday. I was nervous about getting the old one off but I grabbed onto it with a pair of Channel Locks and it came right off. While I was down there I noticed a lug nut in the trunk protruding from a hole in the well behind the rear wheel. Crap... Out came the fiberglass and for once I remembered to put a piece of tape over the drain before I started. I found 3 holes with the wire brush and vacuum cleaner. I think this car must have sat ass to the ocean, I've found fair amounts of rust in the rear but very little up front. Anyway on to the '78 240D which needed motor mounts BAD for some months now which might go some distance to explain why it needs an oil cooler line too. This would have been an easier job if I'd realized you NEED a 6mm allen key, can't do it with a 6mm allen socket. I'm also pleased to find that jacking the car up by the center support in the front makes it easy to get it on my stands with very little fuss. Finally yesterday I glued (SHOE-GOO!) the cloth door trim back into place. I'd put it back up twice but it kept falling down. It lasted through a short ride with the window open last night so I feel good about this fix. -Curt _______________________________________ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
