I usually recommend a generation or two old of HP's workstation class computers (a step up from business class which is itself a step up from home type). The smart money one right now is the xw8200 which is 3 generations old. Dual xeon 3.2Ghz processors, 4GB of RAM, WinXP pro. Great for most anything the home user needs.
The xw8400 is a worthy machine for a bit more money, it can be had with dual dualcore or dual quadcore processors for much less than its original price. I'd consider the xw8200 the w123 of the HP world, the xw8400 is the w124. I SCORED a few months ago and stumbled into an xw8600 that is a rockin fast machine.
