Armstrong was apparently having pints of his blood drawn into plastic bags,
the serum removed, and then the packed red blood cells transfused back into
his circulatory system. Having more red cells gives athletes a higher
intake of oxygen and elimination of CO2; hence more endurance in races.
Previously, this was not detectable since no foreign substances such as
various drugs were used. An international laboratory consortium found that
small particles of the plastic the bags were made of went back into the
circulatory system when this was done and they developed a test for these
particles. They tested Armstrongs blood which had been saved from the
various events and found he had the plastic particles in his blood.
Armstrong and his crew found out about this new evidence and decided not to
continue with the trial. If this test becomes widely used, there could be a
number of awards withdrawn since this previously undetectable red cell
packing technique is supposedly used by many endurance athletes.

Interesting you mention Lance. I understand he had ~500 doping tests and
never once came up positive. So I am wondering how our gummint agency has
decided to delete his 7 TdF wins.

If you have not read or hear the audio book, First Man, about Neil
Armstrong, it is well worth while.
