Black smoke is unburned fuel, typically because the fuel is not atomized properly or because too much fuel was injected for the amount of available air. Since it runs good with boost, it sounds like the second scenario.
As I recall, the ALDA pushes a rod down into the IP to decrease the amount of fuel injected. Assuming too much fuel is being injected, I'd suspect some problem with the ALDA. The ALDA is supposed to sense boost pressure from the intake manifold and then retract the rod to increase the quantity of fuel injected. I assume you did verify that the IP is nor 360 degrees out of time. Bad injectors will produce smoke and lost power and also noise. But that doesn't explain good function under boost. -----Original Message----- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Mike Esh Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 7:48 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Black smoke and loping at idle. Thanks for the help Mitch. I have not changed the Alda yet, I plan on trying that and different? injectors after work today. Michael E.
