I have several doing the same thing, I assumed it was glue. I even had the mirror on the 85 300SD break, well the plastic on the back of mirror broke such that spring for the night/day mode came out. $70 and a call to Rusty fixed it.

I was surprised how HEAVY the mirror assembly is...it looks like glue, but i can;t see why...mold plastic around mirror - maybe put a pad in there for vibration dampening...but all that glue? seems strange.
