The starter motor in my 1983 300TD wagon is going down the tubes. This morning it wouldn't budge until after I had plugged in the block heater for 10 minutes. At all times it pauses when I engage the ignition key, and then screetches the first couple of seconds upon startup.
Clearly I need to do something - but what? My tech says not to buy a Bosch reman starter (says they're way too noisy) but instead to find a "good used one". WTF? What does everyone think? Will one from a W126 300SD starter fit?
