One of my wife's colleagues at MDAnderson in Houston went to college in some little nothing place in Texas or Oklahoma or somewhere, worked hard to LEARN and did well. Got into med school and worked HARD to become an excellent doc, and worked his butt off as a fellow at MDACC too. His wife was totally supportive of him, they had I think 5 kids right quick at a young age, and they made it all work through all that. He was talking about all this one day and reflected that your education is what you make of it no matter where you go (or not).

So, there's that...

I've known this family very well since our kids were in kindergarten.

Mom and Dad were so focused on the academic achievements of daughter that nothing the son
did could eclipse big sister. Therefore, I'm convinced he got wise after beating his head
against the wall and getting nothing for it that he tossed in the towel and just said
"Screw it."

Too bad, as he's a smart kid. Mom and Dad can't seem to figure out "Where they went
wrong with him."

Mom's Facebook page is like an altar to the achievements of the daughter. No mention of
sonny. Daughter just received the "Lex" award for freshmen at U of Houston Law.
This must be a big deal, as she's been spouting off about it for almost a week on FB.

My boss has BA and MA from CMU (Central Michigan, not Carnie Mellon) because
his older brother dropped out of an overpriced smaller private school and their
father decided it's cheaper to have your kids flunk out of a public school than
a private school. (in other words, the smart kid flunked out of college, so why
expect the hard working kid to do any better?)
