I've gotten 53 mpg with the 2012 Passat - there's your improvement (not much, but - -). The cars are heavier now so not as many people die in crashes as they did in the '70's, hence even maintaining the fuel economy is an improvement. Comparing a '70's car to one today is apples to oranges. I think we've had this discussion before . . .
