0-60 speeds measured in seconds not in days.Car starts easily no matter how 
cold it is.Car free of rattles and clanks so common in the '70s.Car isn't all 
rusted out after 10 years.Lack of dying in all but the smallest crashes.
I think we can all pretty much agree cars today are very good (though lacking 
in soul) at least for the first 10-15 years.

I've gotten 53 mpg with the 2012 Passat - there's your improvement (not
much, but - -). The cars are heavier now so not as many people die in
crashes as they did in the '70's, hence even maintaining the fuel economy
is an improvement. Comparing a '70's car to one today is apples to oranges.
I think we've had this discussion before . . .
