Like Korea and Vietnam, it had to be done at the time since it was effectively a satellite of USSR/China. Communism in Russia and China were not viable political/economic systems and were doomed to failure. The American Establishment knew that, so it became a waiting game until the USSR collapsed. That ended the financial support Cuba needed. Continuing Cubas isolation was necessary in order to keep sending a message to communist/socialist leaning nations of South and Central America of what could happen to them if they adopted communism/socialism.
The isolation of Cuba has been relaxed before under a Democratic administration, and then restored under succeeding Republican administrations. If a Republican becomes president it may be tightened again. A lot depends on whether Cubans are tired of living under communism, and who replaces Raul Castro. ............................................... > I totally agree, bottling up Cuba was exactly the wrong technique and > accomplished as close to zero as could practically be measured. > -Curt > > From: Max Dillon via Mercedes <[email protected]> > To: Mercedes Discussion List <[email protected]> > Cc: Max Dillon <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, November 3, 2015 10:19 PM > Subject: Re: [MBZ] single payer health insurance > > I do think that resuming more normal relations with Cuba was the right thing, > at the right time.
