I inspected a $500 k+ house here in Goldsboro, NC, 'bout 20 years ago that had been occupied for about 5 years. At a shower in one of the 1F bathrooms, I directed my flashlight beam into the shower drain and looked directly at muddy ground under the house. Under the house, I found the drain trap and other pieces of PVC pipe that would have completed the connection just lying on top of a pier nearby. As indicated by amount of water under the house, the shower had been in regular use.

Maybe I should just cut a hole in the floor and stick the hose down there and just let it drain under the house. Many years ago we used to live in a house in the country when I was a kid and the washing machine was on a separate drain pipe that just went out back and drained into the pasture.

Wilton - do you make house calls? I'm pretty sure my DW hookup is
incompatible with the plumbing codes of any country in the first, second or
third worlds.

Then, you must have an up loop to at least highest possible water level in
the sink - usually touching underside of cabinet top by the sink or
underside of sink at cabinet top level.

Additional air gap not required here, either.

If you mean the air gap thing no, they are not required here.

Do you have an anti-siphon vent on it? I have had one with and two
without, never noticed any issue either way. Might be a local code issue.

Kaleb,
I just checked my Maytag installation which works with no problems. The drain line comes out the bottom, no up loops, and goes into the kitchen sink drain "before" the trap. Therefore, the trap prevents any gases or odors getting back into the DW, just like traps work in other parts of the house. I think this straight line hookup allows faster/better water drain, while preventing material or odors from getting back into the DW. Mine could have been hooked into the garbage disposal, but was not which I'm happy with...less stuff in the disposal to cause it problems. BTW, I'm
still running the original disposal after 17 years.
