Actually I think I'll stick to consulting logical sources like I have, such
as trusted Mercedes mechanics, and THIS LIST, and yes, the owner's manual,
in addition to my own experience, and anything else that makes logical
sense.

I do understand what you're getting at by telling me to trust the info.
straight from Mercedes. And I appreciate that. I am assuming, though, that
the information in the manual is describing scenarios that involve a brand
new auto, or one that is in close to brand new shape. I don't think they
delve into the area of cars being old and with unknown maintenance. Seems to
me that asking people real-world advice based upon their real experiences
could be helpful.

And like it or not, I am not in a position to bring my car to as-new
condition, nor did I ever intend to. I want to buy it, do my best by it, and
USE it. It's not ideal, but that's life. It's just a car. It's there to
serve me. Thanks again.
