And from the mechanics' description, either the subframe mount rubbers are shot 
(normal expected behavior after 20 years), or the chassis is rusting out around 
the holes where the mounts bolt up (can fail softly like worn mounts, or maybe 
catastrophically under extreme loads). 

How far downhill is LarryT? Is it just a matter of waiting until his knee is 
working again before ripping the subframe out of a car and replacing wheel 
bearings and all suspension bushings, or are his days of major car projects 
gone forever? The wheel bearings will be a very cheap job if Larry can just 
walk the bare hubs into the shop.
